South Padre Island is my favorite beach in Texas—beautiful water, friendly locals, and tons of activities to fill your itinerary for the perfect little getaway. Our first visit was in September 2019, and we’ve returned every year since, never getting bored of this destination.
There are tons of adorable gift shops, and you honestly can’t go wrong with any of them. I’ve picked up shot glasses, coffee mugs, hoodies, and shirts—all great quality. Most shops, in addition to already printed merch, let you choose a blank top and pick a design from their wall to transfer onto it, which I think is such a cool touch.
Pro Tip: If you’re looking to avoid crowds, steer clear of booking during Spring Break—it gets chaotic and loud. I’ve found that August through December and late April are the perfect times to visit. I’ve never had to deal with long waits or overcrowded beaches during those months… just the way I like it!
After a couple of tries, we’ve found our go-to hotel: the Courtyard Marriott.
Hotel Experiences
Isla Grand Beach Resort
While this resort was outdated—it lacked microwaves (not ideal for those of us who love to save leftovers) and desperately needed interior upgrades—it still had its charms. I appreciated the reasonable pricing, the pool area, and the beachfront access. Waking up and taking just a few steps to catch the sunrise on the beach was amazing. However, hidden charges dampened the experience slightly, though I managed to get them resolved. Isla Grand is okay if you’re looking for beachfront convenience, but I think it could deliver more for a resort experience.
Courtyard by Marriott SPI
📍 6700 Padre Blvd, South Padre Island, TX 78597
This hotel has been consistently excellent. The pricing is reasonable, and we love the well-designed rooms. We always try to book a room with a balcony—it’s a game-changer! The pool area is spacious enough, even on busy days, and there’s a bar that connects the hotel to the beach. The staff are always polite, personable, and willing to go the extra mile. One year, a friendly front desk agent upgraded our room for free, and y’all, it was an upgrade! Unless the prices skyrocket, you’ll always find me at the Marriott.
