Nestled in the vibrant East Austin community, Central Machine Works (CMW) is more than just a microbrewery—it’s a go-to destination for great beer, incredible food, live music, and community vibes. Originally a metal fabrication shop known as Capital Machine Works, the space was reimagined in 2019 into the welcoming and inclusive brewpub we know today.
From its repurposed airplane hangar design to the expansive beer garden, CMW seamlessly blends industrial charm with warm hospitality, making it a must-visit spot whether you’re looking for a casual afternoon or a night to remember.
What to Expect at Central Machine Works
Food & Drinks
Central Machine Works is the place where you want to come hungry and thirsty. Their menu is packed with options that hit the spot every time:
- Must-Try Eats: The pizza is fantastic, the pretzels are crave-worthy, and their chips and queso are always a win.
- Cocktail Highlights: Seasonal cocktails steal the show! My recent favorites include the Mango Sticky Rice cocktail and the Frozen Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini.
- Beer Lineup: Their beer game is strong. The Battle Buddy IPA, crafted by one of their veteran employees, totally changed my perspective on IPAs.
Their frozen drinks are a summer essential, and their bartenders always nail the flavor combinations with intentional, well-crafted creations.
The Atmosphere
CMW’s space is massive and thoughtfully designed to cater to everyone’s preferences:
- Indoors: Industrial vibes with lush greenery, comfortable seating (even couches!), and stunning art pieces that make the space feel warm and inviting.
- Outdoors: A sprawling beer garden with picnic tables, umbrellas for shade, and a second bar for convenience. It’s perfect for sunny days and cool evenings alike.
Events & Live Music
CMW’s stage regularly features incredible talent across all genres, but it’s not just about the music. They also host trivia nights, yoga sessions, and even run groups. Their Veterans Day benefit show for Merivis was a standout event, complete with great bands, meaningful connections, and fantastic drinks.
I’ve also attended their Halloween events and a Prince Tribute night, both of which were unforgettable experiences! The energy, the music, and the camaraderie of the crowd make every visit a night to remember.
Inclusivity & Accessibility
One of my favorite things about Central Machine Works is how inclusive the space is. They are LGBTQ+ friendly and dog-friendly, often putting out water bowls for the pups.
For accessibility, they offer wheelchair-accessible entrances, parking, and restrooms, ensuring everyone can enjoy their time here.
Parking Made Easy
There are several parking spaces in the front, but the main parking lot is located in the back of the venue, accessible via E 5th St. If the lot gets full, don’t worry—there’s plenty of street parking around the venue.
Why I Keep Coming Back
I can’t count how many fun memories I’ve had here dancing to music with friends, family, and even strangers. You can’t help but feel comfortable here, and I really value when a business can achieve that.
CMW even features a photobooth vendor outside on several occasions for those who love to collect physical memories. Plus, they often have a food truck on-site (separate from the bar menu), adding to the charm and convenience of the venue.
From brunch to late-night hangs, Central Machine Works has everything you need for a memorable time. The staff are always welcoming, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about creating an experience their guests won’t forget.
Booking an event here is also on my radar—the positive memories I’ve made at CMW would make it a perfect venue for any celebration.

Supporting Veterans Through Merivis
Merivis is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to empowering veterans and their spouses as they take the initiative to begin or advance their careers in cloud computing. With a best-in-class curriculum, dedicated coaches, and a family-oriented approach, Merivis creates impactful opportunities for those who have served.
This event held a special place in my heart, as I am a veteran myself, and so are both my real dad and (ex) stepdad. Knowing firsthand the challenges and sacrifices veterans face, I deeply value initiatives like this that make a tangible difference in our community.
During the event, I had the privilege of speaking with the spokesperson at the Merivis booth, exchanging stories, learning more about their mission, and even discovering how individuals like myself can contribute to their cause. Plus, I got some cool merch to commemorate the experience!
Central Machine Works will always hold a special place in my heart for organizing and facilitating such a meaningful event. It’s moments like these that remind me how powerful community efforts can be.
