This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending a kickback series called Auntie’s House, powered by Where Y’all At Though ATX. Their motto, “Your home away from home,” truly captures the essence of the event, and I couldn’t agree more! This particular edition was a vibrant celebration of Black and Brown cowboy culture, encouraging everyone to step out in their best boots and western wear. It was such a vibe!
The event took place at The Parish, a venue that’s typically members-only. I’ve been here a few times for other events, and I have to say, this space was the perfect backdrop for this gathering.
Upon entering, I was greeted with beautiful smiles and an energy you can only experience when we come together—if you know, you know. Outside, a variety of vendors lined the area, offering everything from hats and candles to clothes and accessories. There were also some food options that I now regret not exploring. But honestly, there was so much to see and take in that I just wasn’t focused on eating!
Inside, there was a Hue Photobooth with a fabulous backdrop, allowing attendees to snap pics and text them directly to themselves (I loved this feature!). The vibe inside was electric, with different DJ sets keeping the momentum going all night. There was also a best-dressed contest, and y’all, the fashion was on fire—my favorite outfit took home the win!
What stood out the most was the sense of community. It felt like one big family reunion, and as a Native Austinite, this is exactly what the city has been needing. I felt no judgment, and for the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel like one of the few who looked like me at an event. Austin has historically struggled with diversity and inclusion, particularly in the nightlife scene. I’ve seen people leave Austin for more diverse cities like Houston because the scene here just didn’t mirror their experience.
The rise of Auntie’s House and similar events is making a difference, helping us find each other and build a stronger, more inclusive community by simply showing up.
If you haven’t been to one of these events yet, this is your sign to check out Auntie’s House and other gatherings hosted by WYAT ATX—you won’t regret it!
