Saying Goodbye to Skylark Lounge: A Soulful Farewell to an East Austin Icon
For over a decade, Skylark Lounge has been a cherished haven for live blues and soul music in East Austin. Nestled at 2039 Airport Blvd, this unassuming venue has been a cornerstone of the local music scene, offering a space where patrons could dance freely and immerse themselves in soulful rhythms.
A Rich History Rooted in Community
Skylark Lounge opened its doors in 2013, but the building’s legacy stretches back further. Prior to Skylark, the space housed Bernadette’s, a queer-centric bar, and before that, it was the Airport Bar & Grill, serving the community for over 30 years.
Owner Johnny LaTouf envisioned Skylark as an inclusive space that honored East Austin’s diverse heritage. He emphasized creating a welcoming environment where everyone felt at home, regardless of background.
A Stage for Legendary Performers
Skylark quickly became a magnet for both local and national talent. The late Margaret Wright, an Austin Music Awards Hall of Fame inductee, was among the first artists to grace its stage, setting a high bar for the caliber of performances to follow.
Regular acts included Soul Man Sam, whose Sunday night residencies became a staple, and other notable performers like Goldie Pipes, Ms. Mack and the Daddies, and Brian Scartocci.
More Than Just Music
Beyond the music, Skylark was known for its friendly staff and inviting atmosphere. The bar served a selection of beers, wines, and cocktails, with patrons often praising the margaritas and other creative concoctions. When the kitchen was open, the crispy fries were a must-have, complementing the soulful sounds echoing through the venue.
A Final Curtain Call
As Skylark Lounge prepares to close its doors after this Sunday, it’s a poignant moment for the community. The venue has been more than just a bar; it’s been a space where memories were made, friendships were forged, and the spirit of East Austin thrived.
For those who have danced under its dim lights and soaked in its soulful ambiance, Skylark’s closure marks the end of an era. Yet, its legacy will live on in the hearts of those it touched.
